Dear Maryland Students,
Welcome to the University of Maryland! We are delighted you selected our great university to continue your academic and personal pursuits.
Our mission statement is clear, “The University of Maryland is committed to achieving excellence as the State’s primary center of research and graduate education and the institution of choice for undergraduate students of exceptional ability and promise." We strive to nurture your intellectual curiosity, improve your research and study skills, strengthen your ability to use knowledge to better yourselves and others, and instill values that will serve you for life.
This Academic Integrity Tutorial is designed to educate you about the tenets of the Code of Academic Integrity. It will help prepare you to make informed decisions that will enable you to always do academically-honest work and avoid the risk of cheating, fabrication, facilitation, or plagiarism. You are members of a community of learners at Maryland. Faculty, staff, and other students on this campus see you as partners in the learning process, and we expect that you will do your part not only to uphold the standards of academic integrity yourselves, but also to encourage your peers to do the same.
Thank you for taking the time to complete this Academic Integrity Tutorial. We hope you will find it engaging and instructional.
Sincerely,
The Student Honor Council & University Student Judiciary
What are we learning about today?
The Code of Academic Integrity - and its nationally recognized Student Honor Pledge - is kind of a big deal around here. You should know what it is and what it means.
If you are caught violating the Code (and we don't think you will), you will go through the Referral Process. We're going to let you know what to expect.
We will be using realistic scenarios to show how your integrity may be tested. You'll see what could count as a Code violation and how you can avoid it.
Obviously, following the Code of Academic Integrity is a good thing. But what makes it good? That's what we're going to find out.
